Canon is a good brand for digital cameras and Nikon is a great brand for SLRs (single lens relflex..like a 35mm). Personally, I really only use my digital camera for snapshots of friends .. not for my serious photography. For that, I use my Ricoh 35mm, my baby. If you're seriously interested in photography, I reccomend saving up for a good 35mm with lenses.
